Milestone

A Milestone in the context of a Phase is a point in time that has an attached set of Goals and Objectives, that have to have been met in order to proceed to the next Phase.

It is a point in time by when a decision should be made by (typically) a Project Steering Committee or a similar governance structure, in order that the Project should continue or stop.

The Project Milestone allows the Project to:
1. Continue into the next Phase,
2. Stop completely or
3. (worst case - and bad practice) Continue with another Iteration of the same phase (because they may not have reached the goal / objectives set.
